Man who hit, killed bicyclist arrested

NEW TAMPA — The Tampa Police department announced the arrest of a man accused of hitting a bicyclist with his car on the morning of Nov. 4.

According to reports, officers arrested Philip Henkin, 58, on Nov. 6.

Evidence obtained during the investigation revealed that Henkin was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Lizards Tail Road at a high rate of speed. The location of the accident is northwest of where I-75 passes over Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.

Reports state Henkin struck the bicyclist head on while attempting to navigate a curve in his Tesla, then crashed into a tree.

Initial reports stated the bicyclist died at the scene and Henkin was transported to an area hospital following the accident.

Henkin is charged with vehicular homicide, reports state, and the investigation is ongoing.
