Second suspect arrested in July apartment killing

Demon Speed, 29

TAMPA — Detectives arrested a second suspect in connection with a July 22 murder at an apartment complex just west of the USF campus, reports state.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, authorities detained 29-year-old Demon Speed on Aug. 9 on an out-of-county arrest warrant by the U.S. Marshals Service in Lee County. The arrest comes more than a week after 25-year-old Darren Day was arrested on a count of first-degree murder by the U.S. Marshals Service, also in Lee County.

Reports state Speed was charged with premeditated first-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The original HCSO press release stated that law enforcement received a call at approximately 3:30 p.m., July 22, to report that an adult male victim had been shot in the parking lot of the IQ Apartments, 12708 Bruce B Downs Boulevard. Responding deputies learned that the suspects drove away from the scene in an unknown direction. Reports state the victim died after being transported to a local hospital. HCSO investigators did not believe the shooting was a random act, according to the original press release.

The investigation remains active.
